The DEFRA guidelines essentially state that the extraction system must not be too noisy and also should not extract odorous and/or smoky fumes.

An odour reduction system can be fitted to existing extraction system or as part of a new installation. You should be careful that the extraction fan unit is powerful enough to extract the kitchen extraction fumes through the carbon filtration system.
